IT IS NOW #30 PER DROP IN UNIZIK AWKA

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN HOUSE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORT,
STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT (SRC),
NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY AWKA.

ADDRESSING THE SITUATION AT HAND

It has come to my notice of the increase in the price of transport within the school. Information reached me on Saturday morning concerning this new development and it has been a matter of urgent attention. As at Saturday bus drivers within the school collected #30 per drop from students instead of the normal #20. I must confess that i personally was not happy when this information got to me, and the entire student representative council are also not happy about this, as the welfare of the students we represent is our paramount objective, both to protect them and speak there minds.

Investigation were carried out and when i met with the bus drivers as at Saturday they lamented on the difficulty and increase in the cost of getting fuel. A driver told me he had to buy fuel for #150 per litter at a near by gas station. This is not happening just within school alone as the cost of transport outside school i.e ifite to temp site, has also increased. This is not just a school problem as the cost of transportation all over the state are no more the same..
The news of the transport system in school is no better today as most bus drivers now run within school environment for as high as #50 per drop,as fuel is now sold for #200 per litter
The executive arm of the government are doing their best in controlling the situation at hand as the management of the school is also concerned about the welfare of the students as pattern to the transport sector. This is why the unizik intervention buses have been released to transport students to there respective faculties and lecture rooms for as low as #20.
Though we all as students are not really happy about this but we must try to remain calm about this whole issue and ignore those trying to use this situation to paint the new government bad, saying that this is what the executives have always wanted. On this note i will like to inform the entire students that the increment in the cost of transport is NOT DUE TO THE REINTRODUCTION OF TTF, as TTF is not being collected from any driver for running within school environment. TTF is not something that is been collected in secret, it is done in the bus stand and will been seen by all if anything like that is done..
I thereby urge all student to remain positive about the union as we promise to bring things back to normal pending on when the F.G brings the price of fuel to normal..
God bless Nigeria. .
God bless Nnamdi Azikiwe university. .
God bless the SUG.

UNIZIK ADMIN REPLIES SUG PRESIDENT

Exclusive: UNIZIK ADMIN vs SUG: University Responds, Accuses SUG President Of Over Desperation, Clears Air On The Questions Asked By The Union

* By Chukwuemerie Uduchukwu

The authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (UNIZIK) Thursday, responded to the allegations made by the president of Students' Union Government (SUG) Noble Eyisi against the university Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku.

Mr Eyisi had through a letter dated 4th May 2015, accused the Vice Chancellor of maladministration and exploitation of the students. In the letter, Mr Eyisi demanded answers from Mr. Ahaneku to some questions he raised. He asked the vice chancellor to disclose the status of the students' account and alleged that the SUG lacks access to it despite the fact that the students contribute annually to that through their school fees. He also demanded the reason why the Post UTME fees were increased from N1000 to N2000. Mr. Eyisi also asked the reason why newly admitted candidates were asked to pay N7500 as biometric capturing fees alleging that a total sum of N45,000 000 was generated from that since 6000 candidates were admitted in the 2014/2015 academic session.

In reaction to the issues raised by the president, the Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the university Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu in a long telephone chat with me Thursday night, apologised to the public especially the university community for the university's delayed response to the issues raised by the SUG president, he attributed that to a very busy week due to ongoing meeting of the university's governing council, and accused the SUG president Mr. Noble Eyisi of been over desperate to gain fame with the aid of some greedy persons. According to Mr. Ojukwu, Mr. Eyisi wrote the Vice Chancellor and instead of waiting for a response, he rushed to the press to publish same letter and also started publicising it in the university.

In reaction to the alleged increment in Post UTME fees and introduction biometric fees charges to newly admitted candidates, Mr. Ojukwu said that the students' leader lacks powers to demand answers to such from the Vice chancellor because Post-UTME candidates and newly admitted candidates that are yet to receive their registration numbers from the university are not undergraduates of the university who Mr. Eyisi represents. Mr. Ojukwu however, said that in order to promote transparency, the university decided to respond to that. According to him, Post-UTME organisation is usually an expensive task and in order to promote its standard, the university had no option than to increase its costs on candidates. He further maintained that due to the reforms by Mr. Ahaneku's led administration, for the first time in the university's history Post-UTME results were released 3hours after its conduct thereby preventing fraudsters from gaining opportunity to sabotage the process.

Mr. Ojukwu also disclosed that the N7,500 biometric charges on the newly admitted candidates were adequately utilised in the biometric screening of candidates during the Post-UTME which highly reduced impersonation. According to him, about 88 impostors were arrested during the exercise.

On the alleged prohibition of the SUG from students' account, Mr. Ojukwu said that the Vice Chancellor is never a signatory to the account. He said that signatories to SUG account include the Dean of Students and the SUG Financial Secretary. Mr. Ojukwu explained that the delay in the payment of the allowances of the SUG officials is due to the nonavailability of SUG budget as the President Mr. Eyisi is yet to present the union's budget.

On the alleged frustration of the union's efforts to compel food vendors within the university to reduce their charges to N150 per plate and other alleged harassments of the union officials, Mr. Ojukwu said the president acted without the approval of the students' representative council and the university had no option than to prohibit such which can lead to anarchy.

On the alleged late night invitation of the SUG president by the vice chancellor to sign some documents, the university's information and public relations director disclosed that such never happened and that the vice chancellor never invited him to sign any document as he alleged. Mr. Ojukwu disclosed that the vice chancellor called a meeting to address students in order to promote peace and justice in the university but the SUG president refused to attend. Mr. Ojukwu further said that Mr. Eyisi has failed to unite his fellow union officials as all of them are against him. He said that Mr. Eyisi has been having problem with other executives of the union including his vice but the university sees such as an internal affair of the students and therefore has always avoided to intervene in line with the policy of non interference in students' matters championed by the vice chancellor. He however advised Mr. Eyisi to reconcile with his fellow elected officials and face his obligations to the students instead of seeking for cheap popularity. He further advised the students' leader to avoid been influenced further by some aggrieved greedy persons who never want the progress of the university.

Mr. Ojukwu finally said that accusing the person of Prof. Joseph Ahaneku of corruption is ridiculous because he is a highly disciplined and principled man. "Can you imagine that when I made a request for the replacement of the toner of my printer, the vice chancellor ordered an investigation to certify the last time such replacement was made, I have worked with two vice chancellors before Prof. Ahaneku and to be honest with you, he Ahaneku is the most disciplined" he said.

POEM RENDITION  BY SAMUEL

MAY 9TH MEMORIAL

A REPORT ON THE MAY 9TH MEMORIAL

We the executives of the Student Association Government, College of Health Science, UNIZIK Nnewi wish to thank immensely, all those who where present at the May 9th memorial service, your presence gave us confidence that we were not alone and it sent a message out to all that we are one people, sending one message with one voice.

The occasion began with the opening prayer which was done by Mrs Perculiar., afterwards the national anthem and the school anthem were sung by the MC, Ekwudo Millicent. The service was graced by the presence of dignitries such as the Chairman of the occasion, in the person of Dr. Ubidwe, Dean, faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ugochukwu, the Dean student affairs, Dr. Ken Nwogu and the Sub-Dean, Dr. Oranusi as well, Reverend Father Izunwa Maurice, the SUG President Awka- Comrade Noble Eyisi in the company of his aids, amongst other dignitaries.

The occasion began in full with a delightful opening remark from the Chairman of the occasion, in which he rued for better safety ethics amongst students so as to prevent the reoccurrence of such an ugly incident. After a the opening remark by the chairman, the MC gave a proper introduction of the dignitries that were present. Afterwards a brief moment of silence was observed in honour of those lost in the fire accident years ago.

In the spirit of sober reflections, an account of the event of that tragic day was given by an eye witness, in the person of "Mama ozi". She gave a heartfelt account of what happened from her own stand point as an eye witness, highlighting her disappointment in the fact that fourteen years later the campus remains without a functional ambulance. The first speaker of the event - Rev. Fr. Dr. Izunwa Maurice, mounted the podium afterwards and gave the memorial lecture on selflessness, highlighting how rare it was to see one selfless enough to give his life for another just as the late Chinedu Chukwunweke, urging us to learn from his example. Then a beautiful poem was presented by Chukwujeku Samuel in honour of the deceased. And also a resounding rendition was given by the melodious St. Cecilia Choir of St. Camillus De Lellis Catholic Chaplaincy to mark the event. There was a procession to the monument to pay respects to the fallen heroes. It was then that the second speaker for the event spoke, the person of our amiable Dean of students affairs Prof. Kenneth Nwogu who was eloquent, gallant and impressive in delivering his speech as usual.

A drama was presented by the Federation Theatre from Okofia, flowers were dropped at the monument and a prayer led by the Dean, Faculty of Medicine - Prof. Ugochukwu was given for the souls of those departed. The M.C seized the opportunity to reverberate the abysmal state of the schools only functioning ambulance and to appeal to the school authority to heed our cry for help and come to our aid in providing that which is pertinent to sustaining and securing the life of students in the campus, a plea that was backed up by every single student present as they echoed " we need an ambulance". The closing prayer was given by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

WORLD'S FIRST HEAD SURGERY COMPLETED IN 19 HOURS

Johannesburg, South Africa — A 36-year-old man has undergone the world’s first successful head transplant. The ground-breaking operation took a team of surgeons nineteen hours to complete and has allowed the patient to be cancer-free.

Paul Horner, who was diagnosed with bone cancer five years ago, was on the verge of death when he was approved for the controversial and possibly deadly operation.

Doctor Tom Downey, who was part of the South African team who carried out the operation, told CNN he is thrilled about the results.

“It’s a massive breakthrough,” Downey said. “We’ve proved that it can be done – we can give someone a brand new body that is just as good, or better, than their previous one. The success of this operation leads to infinite possibilities.”

Surgeons at Charlotte Maxexe Johannesburg Academic Hospital inJohannesburg carried out the operation in February but waited until they could confirm it was successful before they made any public statement.

Downey spoke to reporters about the complexity behind the first ever head transplant.

“This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centered care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering.”

The operation was led by Professor Myron Danus and took place on February 10th of this year.

“Our goal is for Horner to be fully functional in two years and so far we are very pleased by his rapid recovery,” said Danus. “Before the operation, Horner’s body was riddled with cancer and he had less than a month to live. We were fortunate enough to find a donor body; a 21-year-old man who has been brain dead from a serious car accident that happened in 2012. The boys body worked just fine, but his brain was not functioning whatsoever, and there was absolutely no chance of recovery.” Danus continued, “We received approval from the young man’s parents to use their sons body to do the operation. They were extremely happy their son could save a life even in the vegetated state that he was in.”

Doctors say Horner has made an 85% recovery; walking, talking and doing the normal things a healthy individual does.

Health benefits of watermelon by Dr. Sinatra

I thought I knew all there was to know about the perks of various varieties of fruit, but then I discovered a refreshing summertime drink with a fruit I had underestimated: Watermelon. That's right! Watermelon is rich in all the right stuff, including:
  • Carotenoids lycopene and beta carotene that neutralize free radicals to prevent heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. Research shows that lycopene decreases the risk for cancer of the breast, prostate, endometrium, lung and colon; and other diseases.
  • Vitamins A and C which bolster your immune system. One specific health benefit of watermelon is that it provides 24.3% of the daily value for Vitamin C.
  • Vitamin K that helps control blood pressure, regulate heart beat, and possibly prevent strokes.
  • B vitamins: B1 and B6, important for energy production.
  • Magnesium: Works to lower blood pressure, assuage arrhythmia, and more.
  • Potassium: A cardinal mineral for the cardiovascular system.
Loaded with such powerful antioxidants, watermelon does everything right for your health. The health benefits of watermelon include quenching inflammation, an underlying culprit in heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, arthritis, and asthma.
