THIEF NABBED AT MANAGEMENT SCIENCES BUILDING UNIZIK AWKA

Many days for the thief, one day for the owner of the house.
This was the case of one Chidi Otigba (not real names) who was caught yesterday night at the faculty of management sciences where students often go for night class.
While some students go to the faculty of management to read, some unscrupulous fellows see it as an opportunity to steal.
The thief who claims to be a student of sociology was alleged to have stolen a phone and when an alarm was raised, he jumped down the story building and fled.
Some able bodied students followed suit and caught him. The security men were alerted and on arrival, the student was handed over to them.
In his possessions were phones, pack of cigarette, reading lamps and chargers. He confessed to the theft allegations.
This act of stealing has become prevalent at Management sciences and at Garba square where students read often.
Their modus operandi according to a security official in the school who wouldn't want his name made public, is that they wait for students to sleep and immediately swing into action.
He advised students to always keep their phones and laptops at home if possible when coming for night class. He further advised them to be vigilant whenever they come to read.

On the 17th of June, 2015, Ginika a 300L student of Medical Laboratory department of UNIZIK was in her lecture hall when she got a call from her lodge mates about a fire outbreak in her room. It was just 30 minutes after she left. She had to rush back. On opening her door, the fire had burnt virtually everything in her room - her certificates, books, cloths, mattress, shoes, etc. Ginika does not have a gas cooker, there was no power supply within the week of the fire and she doesn’t have a generator set. Many student have described the fire as mysterious.

Ginika lost her father some months back and she is really in need of help and support to help her buy some vital things she will need especially as her exams approaches.

15 things CHS-NAU politics have taught me by Augustine Faith

15 things CHS-NAU politics/leadership have taught me after 4 years:
1. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. The wearer knows that underneath that crown are sharp piercing thorns that no one else can see or feel.
2. If you have not been there you are always at liberty to criticize and hate. Critics always know what to do to make it better but only get it done with there mouths.
3. A leader is supposed to be a good listener but choose the best suggestion for the good of everyone. It is good to have advisers but be quick to discern when they are getting selfish.
4. Do not make decisions when you are angry or when everyone is shouting and saying the same thing. Stop take a break and follow your heart.
5. Remember you are not everyone's best choice and you cannot please everyone. Don't be afraid of anything besides you are the majority's best choice.
6. Things MUST definitely get sore and your leadership boat may rock and head for the rocks you are the captain you just steer in the other direction having the interest of the led in mind.
7. Your opinion is not always the best, try and carry everyone along especially in the decision making process.
8. 'The executives did not vote the executives' but wen we come together those sentiments should be dropped at the doorsteps and we all focus on achieving our specific objectives which forms parts of our collective objectives. As you focus on doing this and I am doing that, we end up doing it together.
9. Public funds can never be satisfying. Its best you keep a clear record that results from a clear conscience and no accusation whatsoever can buckle your knees.
10. When you feel like giving up, go back to your mission statement. Talk to friends that are you vision sustainers and get motivated again to get back on your feet.
11. Always try to speak the truth because lying is a very difficult task n when you get caught you lose your integrity no matter how much you explain
12. Respect authority over you and try to speak well of them because the people you are leading are watching and listening. Respect they say is reciprocal.
12. When any member of the executives make a mistake do not blow up the mistake and try to exonerate yourself. If you do that you are discrediting yourself and your loyalty is questionable.
13. Beware of praise singers and lip servicers they only make you feel momentarily elated but dine with your enemies afterwards.
14. Remember you are not the boss but the servant. Try to serve and not to be served.
15. When you think you are standing alone, always remember that the Holy Spirit will always be around you and if you are sensitive you can even feel His comforting arms around you and hear him whispher "You are never alone".

I dedicate this post to my upcoming NUNSA executives for 2015/16 tenure. I must tell you that most of the things I learnt was after I had made the mistakes already and/or after I watched others. Let our mistakes help you to lead well and become better than us. Aluta Continue...in Spirited Leadership

OTOLO NNEWI FAMILY BECOME FIRST NIGERIANS TO REACH THE NORTH POLE

Following in the footsteps of great explorers and adventurers, the Amazu Family reached the Geographic North Pole to launch their philanthropic foundation Challenge 100 and remember the abducted girls of Chibok, Nigeria.

In doing so they also became the first Nigerians to reach the North Pole.

Originally Indigenes from Otolo in Nnewi of Anambra State, Og and Joy Amazu, along with their young daughters Aimee and Monica, travelled to the Geographic North Pole from Barneo today, where the parents skydived from 10,000 feet onto the ice, with Og then diving under the icecap to walk upside down on the actual site of the Geographic North Pole.

Founded by Og and Joy Amazu, Challenge 100 is a foundation set up by the family, based on the three pillars of entrepreneurialism, philanthropy and family, with the aim of inspiring charitable acts in others.

"We are delighted to reach the North Pole and become the first Nigerians to do so. Raising awareness of Challenge 100 and launching the Foundation is our goal today and this really is the first step on our journey. However it is poignant that we achieve this a year since the tragic events in Chibok and we remember all those that are still effected by that tragedy," said Og Amazu.

"We have spent the last few years doing our due diligence on Challenge 100 and laying the foundations. The Trip to the Arctic is really our official launch of Challenge 100."

It was previously thought that Tee Morgan was the first Nigerian to reach the North Pole. However she had only visited the North Pole Ice Camp, a distance of 25 miles from the actual North Pole, electing not to travel with the rest of the marathon runners to complete the journey to the Geographic North Pole.

The Amazu family however travelled the extra 25 miles and are delighted to be the first Nigerians to achieve the accolade of reaching the North Pole.

They were awarded by the Russian Geographical Society Expeditionary Centre.

New method to detect breast cancer using urine

Researchers at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg have developed an approach for detecting breast cancer by means of urine samples. The method involves determining the concentration of molecules that regulate cell metabolism and that are often dysregulated in cancer cells. These molecules, referred to as microRNAs, enter into the urine over the blood. By determining the composition of microRNAs in the urine, the scientists succeeded in establishing with 91 percent accuracy whether a test subject was healthy or diseased.

The measurement was possible through the detection of only four microRNAs. If the effectiveness of the method is confirmed in further studies, it could serve in the future as a means of monitoring the success of treatment and potentially also of making an early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The Freiburg scientists published their findings in the journal BMC Cancer and have applied for a patent for the method.

About 1.7 million women suffer from breast cancer worldwide. It is the most common type of tumor in women. The disease claims more than 520 thousand lives each year. Up to now, doctors have made the diagnosis by mammography or ultrasound and confirmed it with tissue samples. However, these methods have been subject to recurring criticism due to radiation exposure, erroneous results, and the fact that they involve an invasive intervention.

Experimental test already highly accurate

Prof. Dr. Elmar Stickeler, medical director of Senology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and head of the Breast Center at the Medical Center — University of Freiburg, and his team have now developed a urine test capable of detecting tumors on the basis of changes in metabolism. The researchers measured the concentrations of nine microRNAs in the urine, short genetic sequences that regulate cell metabolism. Four of the nine molecules exhibited significant differences in concentration between healthy and diseased test subjects.

“We discovered that the microRNA profile in the urine is modified in a characteristic way in the urine of test subjects with breast cancer,” says Prof. Stickeler. “MicroRNAs should thus be suitable in principle for a breast cancer test.” With the help of the microRNA profiles, the researchers were able to determine with 91 percent accuracy whether a test subject was healthy or diseased. “Our method therefore led to highly accurate diagnoses,” says Prof. Stickeler.

The study included 24 healthy test subjects and 24 women who had recently been diagnosed with a breast tumor. The patients were in tumor stages 1, 2, or 3. It will now be necessary to conduct further studies to confirm the effectiveness of the method with larger groups of patients.

Patent application

The scientists have already applied for a patent for the method. “The great advantage of our method is that we only need a couple of milliliters of urine and no blood, let alone tissue,” says Prof. Stickeler. That makes the process of making a diagnosis very attractive for continuous measurements, for instance to monitor the success of treatment. “Our method could encourage more women to undertake an examination of this kind, enabling us to detect breast cancer earlier,” Prof. Stickeler continues. The benefit would be great: “The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better we can treat it. Today the disease is treatable in most cases if it is detected early on,” says Prof. Stickeler.

Lovers Found Dead After Using Sex Enhancing Drug

Corpses of the lovers
Two students, a male and female of a University in Anambra State (name withheld), have reportedly died in a hostel room located near the school.

The female student is from Imo State. She visited her male boy friend and they went in together on Saturday but never woke up until their doors were forced open by the police after a neighbor raised the alarm. The male student was 300level student of public administration.

They allegedly died after sex romp and their neighbors never knew until their bodies started decomposing.

The guy allegedly drugged the girl to have access to free sex which resulted to her death and he equally took the pills and lay beside her. Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) from Awkuzu removed both bodies and deposited then at an undisclosed morgue.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), DSP Uche Ezeh while reacting to the incident said investigations were ongoing to ascertain the veracity of the case but confirmed the incident while charting with Daily Independent Metro.

FG BANS LOCAL GIN(OGOGORO) CONSUMPTION

The Federal Government on Monday banned the consumption of local gin, popularly called Ogogoro in all parts of the country.

The decision was sequel to deaths in Rivers and Ondo states due to food poisoning allegedly caused by the consumption of local gin.

The government however confirmed that the death toll in Rivers State had risen to 38 and 18 in Ode-Irele, Ondo State, following the consumption of local gin.

The Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, Dr. Paul Orhii, in his reaction to the death of 38 persons in Rivers State, told journalists that the recent incidents in the state and that of Ode-Irele, in Ondo State were associated with the consumption of locally made gin.

According to him, considering the risk in the consumption of locally made gin, it has become imperative to “warn the public to desist from the consumption of unregistered locally made spirits (Ogogoro) and other unregistered bitters.”

Orhii also warned that government “would confiscate all illegally brewed alcoholic beverages” across the country.

The NAFDAC boss also recommended “immediate reporting and evacuation to the nearest tertiary health institution as quick intervention can save lives.”

He said the NAFDAC team met with the Ondo State Commissioner for Health and Director of Diagnostic Services and an official of the World Health Organisation, who visited Ode-Irele to obtain first hand information.

He added, “A preliminary investigation by the National Centre for Disease Control and WHO, ruled out any infectious diseases and confirmed the possibility of poisoning as the cause and in turn advised NAFDAC to conduct further investigation.

“The symptoms suffered by victims included vomiting, abdominal pain, blurred vision, headache, dizziness and loss of consciousness with subsequent sudden deaths of 18 victims.”

Orhii, who was joined by the Director of NCDC, Prof. Abdulrahman Nasidi, explained that all indications showed that “these symptoms are the hallmark signs of methanol poisoning.”
